About Lucozade
Lucozade is a British soft and energy drink manufactured and marketed by the Japanese company Suntory. The brand was founded in 1927 by a Newcastle pharmacist, William Walker Hunter, as a glucose-based tonic to help people recover from illness and exhaustion1.
It was initially sold mostly in pharmacies before it was more readily available as a sports drink in shops across the UK. Lucozade was acquired by the British pharmaceutical company Beecham’s in 1938 and sold as an energy drink for the sick1. In 1978, it was rebranded as a “pick me up” and a sports drink in 1983 to associate it with health rather than sickness.
Lucozade offers a variety of products, including Lucozade Energy, Lucozade Zero, Lucozade Sport, and Lucozade Alert2. The best-known flavor is Lucozade Original, which is a sort of nondescript citrus flavor.
Lucozade is available in more than 30 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Mexico, Malta, New Zealand, Argentina, the Netherlands, Finland, South Africa, Morocco, and Colombia1 3.
